When you stand on Azienda Agricola Collemattoni’s hilltop veranda, if you look to the southwest over their vineyard, you have an unobstructed view over the gently rolling hills and valleys of southern Tuscany. You can’t quite see the Mediterranean Sea beyond the last and tallest hills on the horizon, but you can absolutely taste it in this elegant, energetic Rosso di Montalcino. Collemattoni’s vineyards are tilted towards the warm setting sun, and high enough to catch a breath of salty sea breeze, woven through with black cherries, wild plum, sandalwood, cinnamon spice, violets, cranberries and fresh tilled earth. The palate offers more of this combination of sunshine and oceanic influence, a classically medium bodied Rosso di Montalcino, with notes of dried raspberry, cranberry, oak spice, leather, oregano, and a touch of orange bitters on the finish. Deftly handled silky tannins frame the wine and set it up for a lingering finish.
