This part of Italy is all about mountains. At elevation like this (600 meters or 2000 feet), grapes get very cold at night, but in the daylight, the sunshine is significantly hotter, and all vineyards are on steep ground where the vines get as much exposure to the sun as possible. Even the presence of the Isarco River is important, as the water both retains an extra degree of heat to release at night into the vines, and reflects an extra degree of light upwards during the day. Viticulture is a sort of farming where the balance of diverse factors is finely measured in the end product. Viticulture in the Isarco Valley is some of the most precariously balanced farming in the world.
